Angul: An undertrial prisoner from Angul Jail in Odisha died while undergoing treatment at the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) on Thursday.
The deceased has been identified as Raghunath Sahu (55), a resident of Badahinsa village under the jurisdiction of Jarapada police station.
Raghunath, along with his son Manas Ranjan Sahu, had been lodged in Angul Jail since April 2023 in connection with a murder case.
Sources said Raghunath, who had a history of high blood pressure, suddenly fell seriously ill on Monday evening. Jail authorities informed his family that he was being transferred to the DHH for treatment. However, by the time his family arrived at the hospital, he had already passed away.
The family alleged medical negligence and claimed that Raghunath was not provided with regular medication during his time in prison, which they believe led to his untimely death.
The jail administration is yet to issue any official statement regarding the incident.
