Unit-I Market In Bhubaneswar Reopens

Bhubaneswar: After remaining closed for six days, the Unit-1 Haat in Bhubaneswar reopened on Wednesday with Rajdhani Daily Market Traders’ Association withdrawing its agitation.

The traders had pulled down the shutters on September 28 and announced not to reopen till the demands, which included adequate parking space for the vehicles of the consumers as well as the traders coming to the market, necessary drainage facilities to keep the market neat and clean and demolition of the temporary shops set up by the traders by encroaching the market space, were fulfilled.

The association, however, called off its protest on October 3 following assurance from Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials. “The BMC Commissioner sought a time of 15 days to meet our demands. We have given them a month’s time to resolve the issues raised by the traders in the meeting. Considering the BMC’s assurance and the difficulties faced by the consumers, we decided to reopen the shops,” president of the association Gayadhar Swain had earlier said.

The traders incurred a loss of around Rs 30 to 35 crore due to the closure, a member of the association said.
