Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government will introduce a self-defence training programme for school girls.

The new programme, named Rani Laxmibai Self-Defence Training, will help empower girls to defend themselves against possible mischief mongers.

Around 2 lakh girls in the age-group of 11-14 will be trained in 45,000 schools across the state.

The 6-day training programme will make children aware of issues like eve-teasing, cyberbullying and acid attacks, and laws related to crimes against women. They will then be taught various self-defence techniques.

Students will also be informed about the government’s helpline services and safety schemes for women and girls.

Physical education instructors of schools will provide training for an hour every working day.

The programme will also include yoga.

Self-defence experts, legal advisors, women and child protection organisations, officers of UP Police and Education department, and experts from UPDESCO, UNICEF were consulted before devising the special programme.
