US Capitol Targeted Again: Man Crashes Car Into Barricade, Shoots Himself

Washington: Gun violence and indiscriminate shooting have become commonplace in the United States.

In another incident of mindless force, a man drove his car into a barricade near the US Capitol in the early hours of Sunday (local time), fired gunshots in the air before shooting himself dead.

According to police, the incident happened just before 4 am at a vehicle barricade set at East Capitol Street NE and 2nd Street SE in Washington.

The man, whose identity is yet to be released, crashed into the barricade and as he was getting out of the car, it was engulfed in flames. As police personnel noticed approached the site, the man fired several shots into the air.

He shot himself as Capitol Police officers closed in, and was pronounced dead later in the da y.

No other injury was reported.

Today’s attack is reminiscent of an incident in April 2021, when a man drove a vehicle into two Capitol Police officers at a checkpoint, killing an 18-year veteran of the force.

Not to forget January 6, 2021, when supporters of then-president Donald Trump stormed the Capitol – which is the meeting place of US Congress and the seat of legislative branch of US federal government — in a bid to overturn his election defeat to Joe Biden.
