US Navy Warship Carrying Marines To West Asia Tracked Off Singapore: Report
Singapore: Maritime tracking data indicates a US Navy warship, reportedly transporting additional Marines and sailors to West Asia amid ongoing regional tensions, is approaching the Malacca Strait near Singapore, according to CNN.
The amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli was observed heading toward Singapore — located at the southwestern entrance to the South China Sea — early on Tuesday, based on Automatic Identification System (AIS) data reviewed by the US broadcaster.
Data from marinetraffic.com, cited by CNN, tracked an “unspecified US warship” leaving Okinawa on March 11, navigating through the South China Sea, and nearing Singapore Tuesday morning at roughly 22 miles per hour.
CNN explained that US Navy vessels frequently turn off AIS transponders to conceal their positions but reactivate them in high-traffic zones, such as Singapore’s surrounding waters, to enhance navigational safety.
The deployment aligns with a Wall Street Journal report, cited by CNN, stating that USS Tripoli is ferrying reinforcements from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) — a 2,200-personnel rapid-response unit based in Okinawa. Three officials familiar with the matter told the Journal the Pentagon has directed this deployment to West Asia.
US Central Command has confirmed approximately 50,000 US troops are stationed in West Asia as part of operations related to the conflict with Iran. CNN contacted the US Navy’s 7th Fleet and 5th Fleet for comment; officials verified the MEU’s movement to West Asia but declined to share additional specifics.
A Marine Expeditionary Unit typically comprises four core components: command, ground combat, aviation combat, and logistics. These units support missions including evacuations, ship-to-shore amphibious operations like raids and assaults, and incorporate both ground and air combat assets. Some are equipped for special operations, CNN noted, as reported by The Economic Times.
Based in Sasebo, Japan, USS Tripoli — an America-class vessel — operates as a light aircraft carrier, carrying F-35B stealth fighters, MV-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft, and landing craft for deploying troops to shore.
As the flagship of an amphibious ready group, it customarily travels alongside amphibious transport docks such as USS New Orleans and USS San Diego. However, CNN reported it could not verify the accompanying presence of these smaller ships through available maritime tracking platforms.
