Bengaluru: A tourist the United States has alleged that she was sexually assaulted at a Karnataka homestay. Police have arrested the homestay owner and a worker in the case.
The incident has been reported from Kutta village in Kodagu. The prime accused is the worker from Jharkhand and the homestay owner has been booked for allegedly attempting to suppress the incident. He allegedly disconnected WiFi services for three days.
He has been accused of preventing the victim from contacting anyone during that period. The victim reportedly left the premises under the pretext of traveling to Mysuru.
She then informed the United States Embassy. US officials contacted police authorities in Mysuru. The case was registered thus.
Kodagu Superintendent of Police said a case of sexual assault on a foreign national has been registered at the Kutta police station, reported NDTV.
The two accused have been sent to judicial custody until May 3.
“Action must be taken accordingly. Whoever is running such a place, like a homestay, must have proper licensing. We have already laid down SOPs on what needs to be followed to operate a homestay. If such incidents occur in violation of those norms, legal action must be taken,” Home minister, G Parameshwara, told ANI.
“Such incidents do not send a good message about the state or society. Especially when outsiders or foreigners are involved… It appears that after the incident, there were attempts to cover it up. But once the police got information, they secured them and obtained details,” he added.
