Vice President Election On August 6; Last Date For Filing Nominations July 19

New Delhi: Along with a new President, India will soon get its next Vice President too.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) informed on Wednesday that election to the office of Vice President of India will be held on August 6, and counting of votes — if needed — will be held on the same day.

The last date for filing of nominations is July 19. Notification for the election to decide Venkaiah Naidu’s successor will be issued on July 5.

Nomination papers will be scrutinised on July 20 while the last date for withdrawal of candidature is July 22.

The term of Naidu, who was the 15th Vice President, ends on August 10.

The Vice President, who is also the chairman of the Rajya Sabha, is elected by members of electoral college, made up of members of both Houses of Parliament in accordance with the system of proportional representation by means of single transferable vote.

ECI said the electoral college consists of 233 elected members of Rajya Sabha, 12 nominated members of Rajya Sabha and 543 elected members of Lok Sabha.

The election for President of India, to succeed Ram Nath Kovind, will be held on July 18.
