Sonepur: A snake rescuer reportedly died after a cobra, rescued by him, bit him in a police station in Odisha’s Subarnapur district on Monday.
According to sources, the snake rescuer, identified as Goura Kumbhar of Mendhamal village under Birmaharajpur police station in the district, was called by a villager of Champamal for rescuing the cobra which had crept into his house.
Goura had gone to Champamal in the morning and safely caught the cobra from the house of the villager. He kept it inside a big plastic jar and then went to Birmaharajpur police station on some work.
On being asked by the staff of the police station to show the snake captured by him, Goura opened the jar and brought the cobra out. While he was holding the highly poisonous snake in his hand, it bit him.
The police rushed him to the district headquarters hospital (DHH) in Sonepur as the community health centre (CHH) in Birmaharajpur did not have the facility for treatment of snake-bite patients. But Goura succumbed during the treatment in the DHH.
