Violence Against Women Rising In Odisha; Minister Submits Number Of Cases In Assembly

Bhubaneswar: The violence against women in Odisha has been rising for the last three years, according to the data furnished by the state government.

Minister of State for Home Tusarkanti Behera submitted a written reply to the questions of BJD MLA Soumya Ranjan Patnaik in this regard in the Assembly on Tuesday. Patnaik had wanted to know how many cases of violence against women have been registered and a comparative figure with national average.

The Minister said on an average, 7 cases of rape, 16 cases of kidnap and more than 29 cases of disrespect/molestation to women were registered in the state everyday between 2020 and 2022. The cases have increased in 2021 against 2020, he added.

Giving the year-wise details of the cases, Behera said 2984 rape cases were registered in 2020, 3327 in 2021 and 868 cases till April 30, 2022.

In 2020, as many as 7937 misconduct and molestation cases were registered, while the figure was 10,018 in 2021 and 3534 till April 30, 2022.

Similarly, 3720 cases of kidnap of women in 2020, 5175 cases in 2021 and 1983 cases till April 30, 2022 have been registered across the state, the Minister said.

Total 3153 cases of domestic violence on women were filed in 2020, while such cases went up to 4889 in 2021 and 1430 cases were registered till April 30, 2022.

Speaking on dowry related torture, Behera said 3759 such cases were registered in 2020, 4953 cases in 2021 and 1442 cases till April 30, 2022.
