New Delhi: AAP leader and Rajya Sabha member Raghav Chadha recently had a vitrectomy surgery in London to prevent retinal detachment in his eye.
He underwent emergency eye care surgery due to a retinal hole, PTI reported.
But what is vitrectomy?
Vitrectomy is performed to treat different eye problems such as retinal detachment or damage from diabetes. During the surgery, the gel-like substance — vitreous gel formed inside the eye, is removed. The gel is replaced with a saline solution or sometimes a gas bubble, according to John Hopkins Medicine.
The surgery is conducted when a patient has eye problems that can lead to vision loss and, if left untreated, even blindness. Patients with diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, vitreous haemorrhage, eye infections, severe eye injuries and those facing problems after a cataract surgery are advised to undergo vitrectomy. It can also help restore lost vision cases due to an eye injury.
In some cases, vitrectomy may not fully resolve the eye problem, an additional surgery might be needed, doctors say.
