Mumbai: Did two commuters get run over by a Mumbai local train due to a flash strike by railway employees at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) on Thursday?
Three others were injured in the incident.
The Government Railway Police (GRP) have launched a probe in the matter.
According to sources, all the five persons involved in the accident were passengers of a local train that came to a halt suddenly. Several people, including the five, jumped off the train after there were no signs of it resuming its journey.
The five were crossing the tracks near Sandhurst Road when they were hit by another train.
While the identity of one those killed is yet to be ascertained, the other person has been identified as Helly Mohmaya (19). The injured have been identified as Kaif Choghale (22), Khooshbu Mohmaya (45), and Yafiza Choghale (62). The GRP is trying to gather more details about the victims.
A senior GRP officer has told Hindustan Times that the task is to find out if passengers were forced to jump off the stationary train and walk along the tracks.
While Pradnya Jedge, DCP, Central Railways, said all angles are being investigated. Sambhal Katare, CSMT GRP senior inspector, said: “We have been collecting all possible evidence.”
Railway staff at CSMT were allegedly protesting the lodging of an FIR against two engineers in connection with the June 9 Mumbra train accident, which claimed five lives.
The FIR was registered by the GRP against the engineers, accusing them of negligence. The probe found that a section of track replaced four days before the mishap in Mumbra had been left unwelded, leading to the derailment of the train.
The flash strike was allegedly called by the National Railway Mazdoor Union (NRMU) and Central Railway Mazdoor Union (CRMU), demanding that the FIR be withdrawn.
