Assam: An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter Scale hit Assam around 7.51 am on Wednesday.

The National Centre for Seismology said that the epicentre of the quake was near Dhekiajuli town, 140 km (86 miles) north of Guwahati, at a depth of 17 km. Tremors were felt in parts of northeastern states as well as north West Bengal and the neighbouring Bhutan.

According to US Geological Survey, the quake struck a relatively shallow depth of 29 kilometres (18 miles) and there was a low likelihood of casualties.

Two aftershocks of 4.3 and 4.4 magnitudes were also felt at 7.58 am and 8.01 am. Several buildings at Tezpur, the district headquarters of Sonitpur, state capital Guwahati and few other places sustained damages, the Scroll reported.

Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted pictures showing damage to buildings in Guwahati and a video of water seeping out from a paddy field at Narayanpur in Dhekiajuli.
