Guntur: It was Sridatta’s first Sankranti after his marriage to Maunika. The man from Rajahmundry, in Andhra Pradesh’s Godavari district, was in for a treat as he travelled to Tenali in Guntur district.
Maunika’s parents made it an unforgettable experience for their son-in-law by preparing a staggering 158 dishes for him.
Sankranti in India is traditionally a harvest celebration. In Andhra, however, it goes beyond that, and is celebrated as an expression of familial love, respect and hospitality, with sons-in-law being treated like kings. The daughter’s family is invited and the son-in-law is pampered with grand feasts and thoughtful gifts.
Vandanapu Muralikrishna and his wife marked the occasion to extend a lavish welcome to Sridatta, whipping up 158 dishes, including sweets, snacks, and traditional goodies — both vegetarian and non-vegetarian.
The dishes included traditional Andhra delicacies like murukulu, chekkalu and garelu, sweet jaggery-laced treats such as ariselu, bobbatlu, sunnundulu and kajjikayalu, and a mix of delicious main course vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes, rice varieties, curries, and more, reported NDTV.

There were mixed reactions as the video gained traction on social media.
Many were left in awe by the effort that went into preparing so many dishes with such variety. Some described it as ‘adirepoyela’ (mind-blowing) spread in keeping with the grandeur of Godavari traditions.
However, some netizens thought it was sheer wastage.
“What is the use of wasting so many types of food items? Will son-in-law have all those items, if not, why not a feast was organised to serve these to the hungry?” wrote one user.
