[Watch] First Lot Of Timber For This Year’s Rath Yatra Arrives In Puri

Puri: the first lot of timber for construction of chariots of deities of Jagannath Temple for Rath Yatra arrived in the town on Wednesday.

According to sources, out of total 765 logs needed for construction of three chariots, total 63 logs were unloaded from three trucks near the royal palace here. The logs include 34 pieces of Asana trees and 29 pieces of Dhaura trees.

While all the logs that arrived on the day are from Naygarh forest division, the rest logs will come from other forest areas of the state in 6-7 phases. The temple has 80 logs unused from the last year’s car festival.

Of the total 657 logs, 442 pieces will be sent to saw mills for making planks to be used as platforms in the chariots and the rest 363 pieces will be used by Maharana servitors for making other parts like wheels, axles, idols of Gods and Goddesses and other materials.

The rituals of arrival of the logs will be performed by temple priests on Saraswati Puja on Saturday. The construction works of the chariots will begin at ‘Rath Khala’ (workshop for making chariots) on the Grand Road of the town on the auspicious day of Akshay Tritiya on May 3, the sources said.
