Bhubaneswar: In a breathtaking video of animals’ maternal instinct for protection of her children, a squirrel has been shot rescuing two babies and taking them to safety of her nest.
The incident took place at Basant Pedi village under Balakati block of Khurda district on Friday. While Soudamini Acharya, a resident of the village, had gone to the garden in her house premises to pick flowers, she found that a squirrel was desperately moving around making shrieking sound.
“At first, I thought the squirrel was playing with others as they often do. But I did not find any other squirrel nearby. Rather, a bunch of grass looking like a nest had fallen under a tree and the squirrel was moving around it. On close observation, I spotted two little squirrels inside the fallen nest,” she said.

Suspecting that the squirrels might have fallen along with the nest from the tree, she called up her brother Biranchi Narayan Acharya who works in Snake Helpline. As Biranchi was busy with another assignment, he advised Soudamini to keep a watch on baby squirrels so that cats or dogs do not kill them. Soudamini took the babies and kept them in a bowl.
After some time, Biranchi came to Soudamini’s house and took the bowl to the nest that had fallen near the tree. While patiently waiting there, he was shooting the activity of mother squirrel. During one-hour exercise, the mother squirrel tried to trace and identify her babies. Finally, she could manage to take them one by one in her mouth to a safe place.
