Srinagar: Rescue operations are on in full swing after a portion of an under-construction tunnel at Khooni Nallah on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway collapsed early Friday in Ramban district, injuring several workers and trapping many more.
At least 10 workers are still believed trapped under the debris, according to officials. Two persons have been rescued, according to reports.
A small portion of the front side of the tunnel collapsed during an audit, PTI reported. The Army and police are jointly carrying out rescue operations.
Those trapped inside the tunnel are from Sarla Company, which is engaged in its construction. The trapped workers have been identified as Jadav Roy (23), Gautam Roy (22), Sudhir Roy (31), Dipak Roy (33), Parimal Roy (38), Shiva Chowhan (26), Nawaraj Chowdhury (26), Kushi Ram (25), Mujaffar (38) and Israt (30).
Union Minister Jitendra Singh tweeted that rescue operations were going on in full swing.
Several tunnels are being constructed on the Banihal-Ramban section of the road, as part of an ambitious four-laning of the highway.
