New Delhi: In a dramatic collapse caught on video, a five-storey building in Mathu Colony, just off the road leading to Chamyana Super Specialty Hospital, crumbled to the ground in mere seconds on Monday. What looked like a regular residential block only yesterday now lies in ruin — a heap of bricks, dust, and debris, echoing warnings long ignored.
Local residents had raised concerns for months. The ongoing construction of a four-lane highway in the area had, according to many, destabilized the terrain. Cracks had been creeping up beneath the building’s foundation — visible signs of an impending disaster. But no corrective action came in time.
As monsoon clouds gathered over Shimla and rains lashed the hillside town, the inevitable happened. The building, bearing a distinctive green roof, gave way. A video posted by user Chaudhary Parvez on X (formerly Twitter) shows the building folding in on itself — roof first, then floors pancaking — in a matter of moments. The footage has since gone viral, eliciting concern, criticism, and outrage.

Fortunately, no casualties have been reported. The building stood vacant at the time of collapse, saving lives, but not lives’ worth of memories, investments, and livelihoods that once resided within its walls.
“First rain and a multistorey building collapses in Shimla. Monsoon has just started and destruction is already here,” reads one poignant post. Another warns: “What lessons were learnt from previous disasters, or are we going to repeat the same story again?”
