Secunderabad: Two trains on the same track. They are on a collision course, hurtling towards each other at their top speeds.

It’s a nightmare for drivers and railway safety officials.

Such a scenario unfolded on Friday in the Secunderabad division of South Central Railway (SCR). The trains had important people on board. One had Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw in its engine. The other had the Railway Board Chairman in its engine. Both trains were on a collision course at their top speeds.

But thanks to ‘Kavach’, the Indian Railways’ indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) System, both trains stopped automatically well in time, without any intervention from their drivers. There was no collision.

The event was organised by the railways to test ‘Kavach’.

A minute-long video shows the successful test of the anti-collision system. The train jumps the stop signal, but ‘Kavach’ brings it to a stop automatically.

‘Kavach’ brings a train to a halt automatically when it ‘sees’ another train on the same line within a prescribed distance.

The system kicks in when a ‘Signal Is Passed At Danger’ (SPAD) or when a train passes a stop signal. ‘Kavach’ brings the train to a stop by automatically applying brakes.

According to the railways, it’s the world’s cheapest ATP system and has been developed to help achieve its goal of “zero accidents”.

Hon'ble MR Shri @AshwiniVaishnaw witnessed the successful trial of 'KAVACH'- an indigenously designed Automatic Train Protection system.
