Ghaziabad:: A 32‑year‑old man allegedly shot his father dead late on Wednesday night in Modinagar, Ghaziabad, after a dispute over family property, police said.
Officials said the accused fired about four rounds from a pistol before fleeing the scene with the weapon. Four police teams have been formed to track him down, as reported by NDTV.
Police added the son was intoxicated when the argument escalated. The victim, identified as 52‑year‑old Hariom Chaudhary of Budana village in the Modinagar police station jurisdiction, was described as one of the area’s wealthier farmers.
According to police, Chaudhary owned roughly 75 bighas of land in Modinagar and also owned shops in the market along Delhi‑Meerut Road. His assets are estimated at around Rs 150 crore. He is survived by his wife Anita and a younger son, Neeshu.
ACP Modinagar Bhaskar Verma said the accused, Nikhil, had a history of alcohol dependence and was frequently rebuked by his father. Verma said Chaudhary had already transferred several properties to Nikhil — including shops and 25 bighas of land — but the son demanded the remaining land be handed over as well. The father reportedly refused, warning that Nikhil would squander the assets on liquor and other vices.
Police said Chaudhary had shared dinner with his wife and younger son on Wednesday night.
Nikhil returned home late and drunk, and a quarrel erupted after Chaudhary admonished him for drinking. During the confrontation, the elder son allegedly took out a pistol and fired, striking his father in the face; Hariom collapsed as more shots hit his face, chest and abdomen. Investigators later noted four to six bullet marks on the body.
Investigators said in 2018 Nikhil shot at his younger brother Neeshu after an argument. Police have reopened that earlier case as part of the current probe.
