Mumbai: Actor Mushtaq Khan, best known for his memorable role as Ballu in ‘Welcome’, passed away on Thursday at the age of 56 after reportedly battling liver cancer.
His death marks a loss for the Hindi film industry, where he built a long career with supporting and comic roles across films and television.
Multiple reports stated that Mushtaq was rushed to Nanavati Hospital in Mumbai on Thursday after his health reportedly deteriorated.
He was admitted to the ICU and is said to have passed away later that evening.
However, at the time of writing, a formal confirmation from Mushtaq Khan’s family regarding the cause of his death was still awaited.
Mushtaq Khan’s journey into films began with theatre. Writer Salim Khan reportedly noticed his work on stage and recommended him to filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt.
His association with Bhatt began with Kabzaa in 1988, followed by appearances in films including Aashiqui, Sadak, Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin, Gumrah and Chaahat.
Over the years, Mushtaq appeared in several popular films, including Hera Pheri, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Wanted, Bala, Badhaai Do and Stree 2.
However, his performance as Ballu, the hockey player in Welcome (2007), remains among his most recognisable roles. He later reprised the character in Welcome Back (2015).
On television, Mushtaq was notably seen as Baldev Tripathi in Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi.
The actor remained professionally active through 2026.
His recent credits included Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain, Drop Out, Hum Angrezon Ke Zamane Ke Jailor Hai and Cocaine, according to his listed filmography.
