Bhubaneswar: Jharsuguda in western Odisha continued to sizzle at 44°C by 2.30 pm on Tuesday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The mercury soared past 40°C-mark at two other places – Sambalpur (43.3°C) and Hirakud (43°C). While Keonjhar and Rourkela recorded 39.4°C and 39°C respectively amid a heatwave warning for isolated places in the districts of Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Angul, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Nayagarh and Bargarh, the coastal areas of Gopalpur, Puri, Paradip and Balasore were relatively cooler at 30.4°C, 31.2°C, 30.2°C and 35.4°C with the formation of a trough line, which has heightened thunderstorm activity in the state.

State capital Bhubaneswar recorded 33.8°C by afternoon.

The MeT office has also issued an orange warning for thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (50-60 kmph) in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places in Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Ganjam and Gajapati districts on April 28. Similar weather conditions with wind speed of 40-50 kmph may also prevail in Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Koraput, Malkangiri and Nabarangpur during these hours on April 28-29.

There is also a predicted for warm nights in Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Balangir and Kalahandi on April 28.

While there is no heatwave warning thereafter, hot and humid conditions may continue at isolated places in districts of Angul, Kalahandi, Mayurbhanj, Balangir, Bargarh, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati on April 28-29; and Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati from April 30 to May 2.

Meanwhile, orange warning of thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (50-60 kmph) in the afternoon/evening hours continues for Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore and Bhadrak on April 29; and Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Ganjam and Gajapati on April 30. Similar weather conditions with wind speed of 40-50 kmph may also prevail at one or two places in the districts of Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri and Nabarangpur on April 30.

Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (40-50 kmph) may occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Gajapati, Ganjam and Keonjhar on May 1; and Mayurbhanj, Balasore,
Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Rayagada and Koraput on May 2.

Similar weather conditions with wind speed of 30-40 kmph is also likely in the afternoon/evening hours at Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, Sundargarh and Malkangiri on May 1; Nayagarh, Khurda, Puri, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur and Malkangiri on May 2; and Mayurbhanj,
Keonjhar, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati on May 3-4.

Squally weather with wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph may prevail occasionally along & off the coast from April 28-30; and wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph on May 1-2.

The IMD has forecast no large change in the maximum temperature across the state during the next 6-7 days.
