Mumbai: The Indian release of Antony Starr-starrer ‘The Boys’ season 5 has sparked backlash online after viewers noticed that several scenes and dialogues had been heavily edited or censored, despite the show carrying an adult rating.
From muted conversations to blurred religious visuals, fans have criticised the altered version, with many calling the cuts “ridiculous” on social media.
The latest season dives further into political chaos, with Homelander tightening his control over America through fear-driven propaganda and authoritarian tactics.
As so-called ‘Freedom Camps’ are used to suppress opposition and strengthen power around the White House, Annie January and her resistance group struggle to fight back.
At the same time, Billy Butcher returns with a dangerous mission centred around a deadly virus capable of wiping out everyone carrying Compound V.
The stakes rise even higher as Butcher hunts for the original V1 strain while an enraged and unstable Soldier Boy makes his comeback.
A significant number of the reported edits in the Indian version appear to involve religious satire and graphic imagery.
In Episode 1, Fifteen Inches of Sheer Dynamite, Sister Sage, played by Susan Heyward, is seen discussing religion with Oh-Father, portrayed by Daveed Diggs.
Viewers noticed that parts of her dialogue were muted in the Indian release, with subtitles replaced by ellipses.
Episode 2, Teenage Kix, reportedly tones down a disturbing virus-testing sequence by cutting away from close-up visuals and relying on wider shots to avoid showing explicit biological details.
Another scene drawing attention comes from Episode 5, One Shots, where Firecracker, played by Valorie Curry, throws a Jesus figurine into a trash bin during a symbolic moment connected to Homelander’s ideology.
In the Indian version, the figurine has been digitally blurred.
The same episode also reportedly censors a line spoken by Homelander rejecting the idea of being a prophet, with the dialogue ‘Prophets are servants’ muted out.
In Episode 6, King of Hell, portions of a brutal massacre sequence involving Black Noir II and The Deep appear to have been shortened to reduce graphic close-up shots.
The edits have sparked widespread debate online, with many viewers questioning why such extensive censorship was applied to a series already classified for adult audiences.
Several fans argued that subscribers should be allowed to watch the original version rather than a heavily altered regional cut.
Others pointed out the irony that much of the show’s violence remained intact while religious satire and even toy-like figurines were blurred or muted.
Some viewers also claimed that uncensored production stills can still be glimpsed through the platform’s X-Ray trivia feature, indirectly revealing scenes that may have been altered in the final stream.
The series features Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, Nathan Mitchell and Colby Minifie in key roles.
New episodes are being released every Wednesday, with the finale scheduled to premiere on May 13.
