Kohima: A raging wildfire erupted in Nagaland’s scenic Dzukou Valley, prompting the evacuation of over 30 stranded trekkers and the suspension of all trekking activities in the high-altitude region. According to reports, the blaze in the southern stretch of the valley in Kohima district, forced authorities to launch emergency operations to contain it from spreading to more areas
The fire is believed to have ignited on Monday, with officials alerted only on Tuesday, leading to immediate action by the Kohima District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) and local volunteers. More than 30 trekkers were safely rescued from the area, with no injuries reported so far. Deputy commissioner B. Henok Buchem confirmed the evacuations and stated that all resources are being mobilized, including additional personnel if needed, the reports quoted him as saying.
Urging tourists to avoid the area, Buchem appealed for community support in firefighting. “Trekking is temporarily banned until the situation stabilizes,” he said.
Joint efforts by the district administration and the Southern Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO) are underway to check the flames fom spreading, using reconnaissance teams and precautionary measures.
SAYO President Zasitsolie Beio noted that volunteers shared videos and photos on Monday afternoon, prioritizing trekker safety and trail closures from entry points like Jakhama and Viswema.
This incident follows a pattern of wildfires in the region, including a major blaze in the Khonoma-Dzukou area last December that required multi-agency intervention. The cause remains unknown, with investigations ongoing into possible natural or human origins.
