Mumbai: In a stern warning, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has vowed to take action against those who attacked police personnel during the violent clashes in Nagpur recently.

Speaking in the Maharashtra assembly on Wednesday, Fadnavis termed the attack on police a planned “conspiracy”.

“We will dig them out from their graves, but won’t spare those who attacked police in Nagpur,” an angry Fadnavis said.

Elaborating on the attack, the CM highlighted how a mob pelted stones at the cops.

“A crowd of around 80 people was involved in stone-pelting. A police officer was attacked with an axe and three deputy commissioners were assaulted. Certain houses were deliberately targeted and one DCP was attacked with an axe,” Fadnavis stated.

Communal clashes broke out on Monday evening over a call to move Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb out of Maharashtra. The tomb is in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district.

Rioters allegedly tried to disrobe a female police officer, following which an FIR was regietered.

Pointing out the role of rumours, Fadnavis said the violence erupted due to a rumour about a religious symbol on the symbolic grave sheet.

Police arrested key suspect Fahim Shamim Khan, who reportedly gathered dozens of people in at least two different places, hours before the Nagpur riots.
