New Delhi: Will Sukhoi Su-30 MKIs and JF-17 Thunder Block III fighter jets face-off in the skies over Armenia and Azerbaijan?
According to sources, Armenia is nearing a deal to procure 8-12 Su-30 MKIs from India. This move comes after Azerbaijan’s recent purchase of 40 JF-17 Thunder Block III aircraft from Pakistan. This purchase has tipped the military balance in the region in Azerbaijan’s favour.
Sam Lichtenstein, director of analysis at US research organisation RAND, told Forbes that though it has been offered Rafale fighter jets by France, Armenia is likely to choose the India’s Su-30MKI as it costs much less while offering excellent performance, flexibility for different missions, and strong technical support from India.
Armenia may also strike a deal with India to upgrade its existing four Su-30SM fighters. These aircraft will be integrated with Indian weapons and modern data-linked systems.
India’s Su-30MKI is a customized version of Russia’s Su-30. Built in India by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), these jets are equipped with Indian-made avionics, electronic warfare systems, and long-range Astra missiles. The Indian Air Force (IAF) has over 270 of these aircraft in its fleet.
HAL is now leading a major upgrade program called “Super Sukhoi”. This upgrade includes AESA radar, improved electronic warfare capabilities, modern cockpit displays, and precision long-range weapons. This will transform the Su-30MKI into an advanced 4.5++ generation fighter.
Armenia has received defence systems from India in the past, but if this deal goes through, it will be the first time that it will get combat aircraft. In the past, Armenia has received advanced weapons like the Akash-1S surface-to-air missiles and Pinaka rocket launcher systems, apart from artillery guns.
Armenia is also looking forward to strengthening its overall air defence network with help from India, Iran, and other nations. The Armenian Air Force, though small with about 5,000 personnel and nearly 70 aircraft, plays a vital role in the country’s defence strategy. It provides crucial support to ground troops and protects Armenia’s mountainous terrain.
If the Su-30 MKI deal comes through, it will be the first time that India will be exporting these air-superiority fighters. India is eyeing more customers, not only for the Su-30 MKIs, but also its Light Combat Aircraft (LCA).
