Bhubaneswar: A cyclonic storm is likely to form over the southwest Bay of Bengal (BoB) around November 10, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday.
“IMD GFS and NCEP GFS models are indicating intensification of a likely low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal up to the stage of a cyclonic storm over southwest Bay of Bengal around November 10. The system over Bay of Bengal is being continuously monitored for further development and movement,” it added.
The Met Office further said that tropical cyclone heat potential is about 120-140 over some parts of the eastern equatorial Indian ocean adjoining Sumatra coast. In addition, the presence of near-equatorial convergence zone, positive low-level vorticity, positive low-level convergence, positive upper-level divergence over the equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal are favourable to support convective activity over this region.
The IMD had earlier said that a low-pressure area is likely to form over southeast Bay of Bengal around November 9 under the influence of a cyclonic circulation over southeast Bay of Bengal off Sumatra Coast. It is likely to become more marked and move in the west-northwestward direction towards the north Tami Nadu coast during the subsequent 48 hours.
The system will be named ‘Jawad’, a name suggested by Saudi Arabia, if it intensifies into a cyclonic storm.
