New Delhi: Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said that TMC is the final decision maker when it comes to choosing a political heir. “The Trinamool Congress family will take the final decision,” she said in response to a question on succession in the party.
Banerjee was speaking to reporters in New Delhi on Monday when asked whether she had plans similar to BSP chief Mayawati, who recently anointed her nephew Akash Anand as her “political heir”.
“Trinamool Congress is a family. I consider each and every one of them to be part of a family. Whenever the time comes, the Trinamool Congress family will decide on it. Now, it will go on as before,” she said.
The CM’s reply came in the backdrop of a statement made earlier in the day by Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh, who had told reporters Diamond Harbour MP and party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee would be CM Mamata Banerjee’s successor. Ghosh had said: “Till 2036, Mamata Banerjee will remain the chief minister. Abhishek Banerjee will be the chief minister after that. There is no confusion, debate or any need for discussion on this issue. But before that, if any important responsibility comes Mamata Banerjee’s way and she takes an exceptional decision… these chances always remain. Then Abhishek will take responsibility of the state.”
