Kolkata: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has reiterated that the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 will not be implemented in the state. Calling for peace, a day after major violence broke out in Dhulian, in the Bangladesh-border hugging district of Murshidabad, Mamata posted a message on ‘X’, asking people to observe restraint.

“I appeal to people of all religions to maintain peace. Please do not engage in any irreligious activity in the name of religion. Every life is precious ….. Do not incite riots for political gains. Rioters cause immense harm to society,” she posted.

Mamata went ahead to say: “I want everyone to remember that the law that many people are protesting against was not promulgated by us. It was brought about by the central government. If you have questions, ask them to the central government. We have made our position very clear about this Act. We do not support it. It will not be implemented in our state. What is the cause for the riots then?”

Rioters went on the rampage for over three hours on Friday, looting shops and establishments and setting them on fire. Policemen stood mute spectators as victims ran for cover. This was the second time in a week that Muslims – who are a majority in the district – got engaged in violence in Murshidabad. On Monday, they set two police vehicles ablaze in Jalangi.

“Do remember that we will take legal action against those who are inciting riots. We do not encourage any kind of violence. Certain political parties are attempting to gain political mileage by misusing religion. Do not fall into their trap. I believe that religion means humanity, tolerance, and harmony. I appeal to all to maintain peace and harmony,” Mamata wrote.

Her comments invited sharp rebukes from the Opposition in the state, with the BJP wanting to know how a Constitutional head of state can refuse to implement a law passed by Parliament.
