Will Odisha See An Early Onset Of Monsoon Too?

Bhubaneswar: Odisha is simmering with unbearable hot weather and intense humidity and the sultry weather condition will continue till June 11 when the monsoon is expected to arrive in Odisha, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

The MeT office had issued yellow warning for thunderstorm with lightning till 8.30 am on June 2 while rainfall activity in some parts of the state will continue till June 4. The occasional Nor’wester-induced rain would not provide much relief from the sweltering heat and humid conditions. The rising humidity level due to the incursion of moisture from the sea, however, is making favourable conditions for the onset of monsoon in the state, it said.

According to senior meteorologist Jason Nicholls, conditions are now favourable for its advancement into Tamil Nadu and far northeast later this week. While monsoon reached Kerela on May 29, three days ahead of schedule marking the beginning of the four-month rainsy season in India, he predicted a slow advance over the next few days with it possibly reaching Mumbai by June 6. “Onset in Odisha and WestBengal possible around the 10th,” he tweeted.

This was only the third occasion in the past 10 years when the summer monsoon recorded an early onset (before June 1).

IMD sources said it is too early to predict the arrival of monsoon in Odisha. The advance of the monsoon map shows the seasonal rains would cover the state between June 11-16.
