Mumbai: A gruesome murder case from Maharashtra has drawn comparisons with the infamous Meerut killing after a woman allegedly joined hands with her husband, brother and another associate to murder her lover, stuff his body into a drum and dump it in a drain in Thane district.
According to police, the incident came to light after 25-year-old Arbaz Maqsood Ali Khan of Mumbra went missing on April 3. Khan had reportedly told his family he was leaving for Dadar for work, but never returned home. His father later lodged a missing person complaint at the Mumbra police station.
During the investigation, police tracked Khan’s last location to the Vasai area. Investigators also found that the phone location of his girlfriend, Mehjabeen Sheikh, matched the same area, raising suspicion.
Police detained Mehjabeen for questioning. According to police, the accused initially denied involvement but later confessed during interrogation.
Investigators said the murder was allegedly part of a failed extortion attempt. Police claimed Mehjabeen, along with her husband Hasan, brother and another accomplice, tried to extort money from Khan. When the attempt failed, they allegedly tied his hands, assaulted him and killed him.
The accused then allegedly stuffed Khan’s body into a drum and dumped it into a drain in the Mumbra area.
Police have arrested Mehjabeen and her brother, while her husband Hasan and another accused are absconding. Officials said Tariq already has multiple criminal cases registered against him.
A case has been registered under charges of murder, criminal conspiracy and destruction of evidence. Further investigation is underway.
