Woman Postal Agent Held For Embezzling Depositors’ Money In Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Twin City Commissionerate Police have arrested a woman postal agent from Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur for allegedly misappropriating crores of rupees of deposits.

The accused has been identified as Swarnalata Das.

A resident of Old Town area here, she had collected money from many depositors by identifying herself as a postal agent during the last two years but embezzled those fraudulently, sources said.

A complaint was lodged against her at Lingaraj police station, alleging that she took Rs 15,00,000 in instalments to deposit in the post office savings of an account holder. She took the complainant’s saving passbook, RD passbook and FD Ppssbook and did not return the documents even after repeated requests. When the complainant went to Swarnalata’s house at Kendar Lane here, the latter abused her in filthy languages and also threatened her with dire consequences.

Following the arrest, as many as 127 postal passbooks of 98 depositors were seized from her house. Further probe in this matter was underway.
