Bhubaneswar: Odisha joined the International Women’s Day celebrations on Sunday with heartfelt tributes from political leaders and a creative artistic expression, conveying the message of empowerment, equality, and world peace.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi extended warm greetings to women across Odisha, praising their vital role in society and family. He also highlighted key state government initiatives aimed at women’s welfare and economic independence, including the Subhadra Yojana, a flagship programme providing direct financial assistance of Rs 50,000 over five years to eligible women aged 21-60 from economically weaker sections to boost their socio-economic status and digital literacy.

Majhi also mentioned Lakhpati Didi initiative and the Mukhyamantri Kanya Sumangala Yojana, alongside central government schemes like Mamata and Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana, which offer support to mothers and women for health, nutrition, and financial security. “The fundamental goal of all our efforts is to provide respect and equal opportunities to women’s power. From health to self-reliance, we are committed to advancing women’s power in every sector. Let us celebrate the indomitable courage and successes of women and participate in building an egalitarian society,” he posted on X.

Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik also conveyed his wishes, saluting the indomitable spirit and leadership of women. He recalled landmark efforts from his time as Chief Minister, such as Mission Shakti, a self-help group movement empowering rural women through collectives and livelihoods, along with the Mamata scheme for maternal support and the state’s Gender Budget focusing on equitable resource allocation for women’s development. “Women empowerment has always been the guiding force behind all our initiatives,” he added.

Adding an artistic dimension to the day’s observances, renowned sand artist Manas Kumar Sahoo presented a captivating 10-minute live sand animation performance in Puri. The visually striking creation celebrated women’s empowerment across diverse fields and paid homage to prominent Indian women achievers, including President Droupadi Murmu, legendary playback singer Lata Mangeshkar, Olympic medalist P V Sindhu, and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh.

Sahoo emphasised the profound impact of women on societal progress, stating, “Women have played an important role in the development of society. Our President Droupadi Murmu is a leading example of this. I have created this sand animation to celebrate such women.”

International Women’s Day, observed annually on March 8, recognises women’s achievements while advocating for gender equality. This year’s global theme, as promoted by official campaigns, includes calls for “Rights. Justice. Action.
