Bhubaneswar: There was agony for some, ecstasy for others on an action-packed Saturday at the Kalinga Stadium which staged the World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meet.
South Africa’s Tshepo Jason Tyantini and promising Tamil Nadu sprinter Abinaya Rajarajan emerged as the fastest athletes of the event.
Tyantini won the Men’s 100m event in a career-best time of 10.11 seconds, while Abinaya took the Women’s 100m title clocking 11.34 seconds.
Local favourite and one of India’s top sprinters Animesh Kujur disappointed with a 10.32 second run to finish sixth overall. National record-holder Gurindervir Singh was even slower, taking ninth place with 10.39.
The women’s 100m was dominated by Indians, but veteran Srabani Nanda finished sixth in 11.85 seconds.
Jyothi Yarraji won bronze in Women’s 100m Hurdles with a timing of 13.24 seconds, helping her to qualify for next month’s Asian Games in Japan. Charisma Taylor of Bahamas (12.96 seconds) and Japan’s Yumi Tanaka (13.04) bagged the first two places.
In Men’s Javelin, Rohit Yadav topped the field with a personal best effort of 87.68 metres, pushing Commonwealth Games bronze-winner Yashvir Singh (82.94m) to second place.
Commonwealth Games silver-medallist Murali Sreeshankar won the Men’s High Jump with a leap of 8.07 metres.
Odisha CM Mohan Majhi gave away the prizes for the last few events. Former World Championship medallist Anju Bobby George was among the audience and accompanied the CM.
