New Delhi: Microblogging platform X was hit by a massive outage across several regions on Friday.
Users trying to access the platform found a Cloudflare error message stating that the site was protected but unreachable due to a problem with the web server.
Users reported blank timelines, login failures and ‘something went wrong’ messages on web as well as mobile interfaces.
Around 9 pm on Friday, online outage tracker Downdetector showed over 68,000 reports.
The outage began around 3 pm (8.30 pm IST) in the UK. Problems were reported in several countries in Europe, North America, Asia, and other regions.
Despite functioning normally, Cloudflare — the content delivery and security service used by X – could not establish a connection with X’s servers.
“Cloudflare protects this website. But something went wrong trying to reach it If the problem isn’t resolved in the next few minutes, it’s most likely an issue with the web server you were trying to reach. Cloudflare is a global network that secures websites, applications, remote teams, and networks. We help build a better Internet through a focus on security and speed,” read the error message read.
Such alerts indicate a server-side issue at the website being accessed, rather than a problem with the user’s device, internet connection or account.
Cloudflare was not able to reach X’s backend infrastructure, which pointed to an internal outage, overload or configuration failure.
There is no news of any cyber attack at this moment.
X is yet to issue an official statement about the cause of the outage or when the service will be fully restored.
Experts have advised users to wait and retry periodically until the issue is fixed.
