New Delhi: After eight years of trial, controversial Punjab preacher Bajinder Singh was sentenced to life imprisonment by a court in Mohali on Tuesday in a 2018 rape case. Bajinder was convicted of sexual misconduct and rape last week. The preacher used to claim of miraculously healing people of HIV, muteness, etc.
Bajinder has been lodged in Patiala jail. The case relates to a woman, who had claimed that Bajinder lured her to his residence in Mohali and raped her on the pretext of helping her in settling abroad.
The complainant said that the pastor filmed the act and demanded a huge sum of money. He threatened to make the obscene videos public.
An FIR was registered against Bajinder, following which he was arrested at Delhi airport in 2018. He was released on bail.
Bajinder had gained fame for his viral ‘Yashu Yashu’ videos. He is also facing another sexual harassment case based on a complaint by a 22-year-old woman.
The preacher runs two churches in Jalandhar and another in Mohali. He enjoys huge popularity on social media with 3.12 million subscribers on YouTube and 1.1 million followers on Instagram.
He was born into a Jat family in Haryana but later converted to Christianity while he was jailed in a murder case. Bajinder has been endorsed by several celebrities.
