Ahilyanagar: A 19-year-old NEET re‑examination candidate allegedly took her own life at home in Jalalpur village of Karjat taluka, Ahilyanagar district, after being dismayed by her recheck score, police said on Monday, ANI reported.

Maharashtra police identified the deceased as Ankita Suresh Sangle. Police said Ankita, a medical aspirant, hanged herself at her residence after she received 166 marks in the recent NEET re‑examination. The Karjat Police have registered the death as accidental and said further inquiries are ongoing.

Police said the incident occurred at about 4.30 pm on Saturday. Ankita’s father and brother were away in Pandharpur for Ashadhi Ekadashi darshan, while her mother was at home. Police said Ankita entered her study room and, after some time with no response, her mother opened the door and discovered her hanging. She was declared dead at the scene.

Handwritten Note Recovered

Investigators recovered a handwritten note in the room. In it, Ankita apologised to her family for not meeting their expectations and urged them not to blame themselves for her death. She wrote: “You gave me so much love, but I couldn’t fulfil even one of your wishes. Mom, you supported me like a friend in every difficulty… Brother, please take good care of Mom and Dad. Don’t let them lack anything.”

The note also said she sank into depression after failing to reach the marks she had hoped for in NEET and that her ambition to become a doctor remained unfulfilled, as reported by Mint.

Family Grief

Ankita’s father, Suresh Sangale, told police that his daughter had prepared thoroughly for NEET and had initially secured good marks, but was under severe stress following allegations of irregularities around the exam. He said she hanged herself from a ceiling fan at their home.

Wider Fallout

The tragedy comes amid a larger controversy after the NEET‑UG paper leak in May. The government ordered a re‑examination on June 21. Several aspirants reportedly died by suicide following the leak, prompting nationwide outcry and calls for accountability.

On July 25, the parents of Akanksha Chaturvedi — another aspirant who died by suicide after the NEET‑UG paper leak — demanded justice and compensation, saying they were not satisfied with education minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation.

Akanksha’s mother, Neelam Chaturvedi, told ANI: “My daughter won’t come back. We are not satisfied with anything. The government did not come to meet us. What will happen with the resignation? Our daughter should get compensation; we are not satisfied with the resignation. We demand that our daughter should get justice and compensation, and perpetrators should be hanged. Dharmendra Pradhan stepped down; PM Narendra Modi and Amit Shah should also step down. We had to sell our land; will it come back?”

Akanksha’s father, Krishna Kumar Chaturvedi, said, “I don’t see anything beyond my daughter. Our daughter wanted to be a doctor and serve the country.”

Government Response

Following the string of deaths and the public backlash, Union Minister JP Nadda said the government has agreed to suitable compensation for families of NEET aspirants who died by suicide. On July 25, Dharmendra Pradhan tendered his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying he stepped down “in the larger interest of students to ensure that the country’s youth do not become ‘trapped in a web of confusion’.”
