Pennsylvania: One person was killed and six others were injured in a shooting during a homecoming event at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania on Saturday night, officials said. Police have detained one person in connection with the incident and recovered a firearm from their possession.
According to the Chester County District Attorney’s Office, the shooting took place around 9pm near the university football field in Oxford, about 50 miles west of Philadelphia. The gunfire broke out during a yard festival and tailgate gathering attended by students, alumni and visitors.
Authorities said four of the victims were taken to Christiana Hospital with gunshot wounds. The identity of the deceased has not been released yet.
Police confirmed there is no active threat to the campus community, but investigators are still working to determine the motive behind the attack. The Chester County DA’s office has urged anyone with information to contact the FBI tip line.
Lincoln University, in a post on Instagram, said counselling services would be available from Sunday morning for students and staff affected by the incident. The university described the shooting as a “deeply tragic event” that disrupted what was meant to be a celebratory homecoming weekend.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said he was closely monitoring the situation and that state authorities were coordinating with local law enforcement.
