On Wednesday, the government had asked the authorities concerned to increase the COVID-19 vaccination of senior citizens to one lakh per day after an AirAsia flight carrying a consignment of 9,04,180 doses of Covishield vaccine reached Odisha.

In a letter to all district collectors and municipal commissioners, Additional Chief Secretary of Health and Family Welfare Department, PK Mohapatra directed them to accelerate the pace of vaccination of elderly persons in all districts and urban areas.

The officials were also asked to activate private hospitals as COVID Vaccination Centres.

The third phase of vaccination against COVID-19 was launched across the country on March 1 for persons above 60 years and those between 45 and 59 years of age with co-morbidities.

During the first two phases of vaccination, healthcare workers and frontline workers were vaccinated.
