17 Killed, 3 Injured In Crane Accident At Thane Expressway Site
Mumbai: At least seventeen workers were crushed to death early Tuesday as a girder machine fell on them during construction of the third phase of Samruddhi Expressway in Maharashtra’s Thane district.
According to reports, the incident took place around 12 am near Sarlambe village in Shahpur tehsil, around 80 km from Mumbai. Three injured workers were rushed to Shahapur Gramin hospita, where they are being treated for their injuries. “Till now 17 dead bodies have been retrieved and three have been injured,” reported ANI quoting NDRF.
Those killed include five site engineers and 11 workers. Their bodies have been sent to Shahapur Government Hospital for autopsy. Workers trapped under the girders are being pulled out by police, fire brigade and NDRF personnel, engaged in rescue operations, with the help of cranes, the TOI reported.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the victims.
