Bhubaneswar: In a shocking incident, two minor siblings were rescued after allegedly being denied food and subjected to physical abuse for days by their grandmother at GGP Colony in Bhubaneswar.
The children – a boy and a girl – were reportedly tortured by their paternal grandmother following the death of their mother. Their father was stated to have suffered a mental breakdown and unable to look after the children.
After learning about the plight of the children, neighbours intervened and informed Mancheswar Police Station following which the two were rescued.
As per local residents, the children had been enduring regular abuse and torture by both their grandmother.
The children reportedly informed the police that their grandmother often denied them food and frequently subjected them to physical and emotional abuse.
Dismissing the allegations, grandmother of the kids, identified as Jyotsana Rani Patra, claimed that she had punished the children for playing all the time and neglecting their studies.
Police said they have launched an investigation into the matter and will take further steps based on medical reports, statements of witnesses and other evidence.
