Kataka: Police have detained two minor boys following allegations of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old female student inside a hotel room at Badambadi in Odisha’s Kataka city.
The matter surfaced after the survivor, a first-year Plus II student, attempted to end her life by jumping into the Mahanadi River near Gadgadia Ghat. She disclosed the details of the alleged assault after being rescued and questioned by police.
According to sources, the girl had developed a relationship with one of the accused, a 16-year-old college classmate residing in Bali Sahi. The classmate invited her to meet him at a hotel in Badambadi last month, where he was accompanied by his 17-year-old acquaintance from Baunshagali. After spending time conversing, the two boys allegedly sexual assaulted her inside the hotel room.
Following a formal complaint, Badambadi Police registered a case and took both suspects into custody. As part of the ongoing probe, police are scrutinising the hotel management’s operational compliance to determine how the minors were permitted entry into the establishment and whether mandatory age verification and standard identification protocols were enforced prior to check-in.
The incident has come to light close on the heels of the alleged gang rape of a 26-year-old woman in a car by a group of men at an isolated place along the Kataka-Chandbali State Highway, about 45 km from Kataka city, in the early hours of Wednesday, while returning home to Kendrapada with her boyfriend.
