Cuttack: At least three workers were killed and two others critically injured after a concrete slab fell on them during construction of a bridge over the Kathajodi River in Cuttack on Saturday.
As per preliminary information, the mishap took place at the construction site near Khannagar when a ready-made concrete slab being carried by a crane collapsed.
Five workers with critical injuries were immediately rescued and rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack where two of them were declared dead by the doctors on arrival. Another worker was declared dead later at the hospital.
The deceased workers have been identified as Soumya Ranjan Behera, Sibasankar Patnaik and Subhas Chandra Bhakta. The critically injured are Arun Barik and Bikala Jena.
Police, Fire Service personnel and other rescue teams are on the spot, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact reason behind the mishap.
Sources said that the bridge construction work was underway after the inauguration of the new bus terminal at Khannagar.
