Bhubaneswar: A 22-year-old engineering student allegedly took his life by jumping in front of a moving train near Lingaraj railway station in Odisha’s capital on Wednesday.

He deceased has been identified as Tapan Acharya, son of Ajay Acharya of Botanda Mahaveer Nagar area in the city.

Tapan was a student of a city-based private engineering college. His father attributed the incident to alleged “mental torture” by the college authorities, which had reportedly confiscated Tapan’s mobile phone earlier in the day and asked his parents to visit the college for discussions on May 1.

“The college authorities seized Tapan’s mobile phone at around 11 am. When our son did not respond to our calls, we contacted the college authorities, which asked us to visit the college on May 1 for discussions. Tapas must have been under duress following the incident,” alleged the deceased’s father.

The family then tracked his e-vehicle and found his body on the railway tracks near Lingaraj station.
