Rourkela: A second-year BTech student was found hanging in the hostel room inside MS Swaminathan Hall of Residence at NIT-Rourkela on Monday.
Sources identified him as Debamalya Roy Karmakar, a native of Agartala in Tripura. He was a Electronics and Communication Engineering student. It is being suspected that he died by suicide though the exact reason which prompted him to take the extreme step is yet to be ascertained.
Speaking to Odisha Bytes, NIT-Rourkela Registrar Rohan Dhiman said that the student was alone in the room since his roommate had left for his hometown in Sambalpur to spend the weekend. “His parents were constantly in touch with him and they informed the authorities around 9.30 am when he did not take their call. The door had to be forced open. Police have reached the spot and they are waiting for the forensic team to arrive,” he said, adding that further details will be known later.

Debamalya’s body was later seized by Sector-3 police and preserved at the morgue of Ispat General Hospital. His parents are expected to the campus on Tuesday morning following which autopsy will be conducted, sources said.
Though no suicide note was found at the spot, police have seized the student’s laptop and mobile phone for clues and further investigation.
Sources further said that Debamalya led a reclusive life and kept away from extra-curricular activities. He largely confined himself to classes and hostel room.
