Brahmapur: Three school students died in two separate drowning incidents during Ganesh idol immersion in Odisha’s Ganjam district on Wednesday.
Two students drowned in the Ghodahad river in Hinjilikatu area of the district while taking part in the immersion of a Ganesh idol.
The deceased have been identified as Adarsh Sahu (14) of Gajapati Marg area under Hinjilikatu municipality and Preetam Sameli (14) of Gayatri Nagar. Both had gone to the river along with others for the immersion ceremony and drowned as they went deep into water.
Local people rescued both in a critical condition and rushed them to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared them dead.
Police have seized the bodies and sent them for post-mortem examination. A case has been registered and an investigation is underway.
In another incident, a Class VIII student drowned in a village pond while immersing a Ganesh idol in Siddhikhandi area under Digapahandi police station limits in the district.
The deceased student has been identified as Sitanshu Jena, son of Moram Jena.
Sources said a group of tuition students from Siddhikhandi area under Kotinada panchayat had gone to the local pond to immerse the Ganesh idol. Sitanshu slipped into deep water.He was pulled out of the pond and rushed to Digapahandi hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
