Brahmapur: A long-simmering family feud over inherited farmland erupted into a violent clash on Sunday morning in Ambatha village under the Erendra panchayat in Ganjam’s Sanakhemundi block, leaving five people injured.
The conflict involved two brothers, Shiva Nahak, 40, and Babula Nahak, 53, who have been locked in a prolonged disagreement regarding the division of their ancestral agricultural property. Despite multiple village mediation attempts by local elders and relatives, the dispute remained unresolved.
According to local police, the situation escalated on Sunday morning when an argument broke out while Babula was working at home. The verbal spat quickly turned physical when Shiva allegedly struck Babula on the head with a spade. In retaliation, Babula and his relatives reportedly attacked Shiva and his wife using weapons.
The altercation left five injured: Shiva Nahak, his wife Sulta Nahak (35), Tikina Nahak (45), Babula Nahak, and Bhola Nahak (19). All five were initially rushed to the Adapada Community Health Centre for treatment. Shiva and Sulta, who suffered severe injuries, were subsequently transferred to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Brahmapur.
Complaint and counter complaint have been filed by both factions at Patapur police station.
Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) Dipti Ranjan Behera confirmed that separate cases have been registered and an official investigation is underway.
