New Delhi: An overnight addition of 83,347 COVID-19 cases took India’s affected tally past 56 lakh to stand at 56,46,010 on Wednesday.

Another 1,085 patients succumbed to the infection in the last 24 hours, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare informed.

A total of 90,020 people have lost their lives due to COVID-19 so far with the country reporting more than 1,000 deaths daily for over a fortnight. India’s case fatality rate has, however, dropped to 1.60 per cent.

The death toll outdid the single-day surge in COVID-19 cases for the third day in a row.

India continues to occupy the top position in the world in terms of total recoveries with more than 45 lakh infected people having been cured. India’s recoveries constitute over 19 per cent of total global recoveries, informed the ministry.

India has recorded high single-day COVID-19 recoveries successively during the last four days, it added.

While 81.25 per cent (45,87,613) people have recovered from the infection so far with 89,746 being discharged on Tuesday, another 17.54 per cent (9,68,377) are still under treatment.

75 per cent of the new recovered cases are being reported from ten States/UTs, viz. Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Delhi, Kerala, West Bengal and Haryana.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 6,62,79,462 samples have been tested for COVID-19, which includes Tuesday’s 9,53,683.
