Berhampur: Police detained a youth after he allegedly attempted to rape a minor girl in Ganjam district on Saturday.
According to police sources, the incident took place when the 14-year-old girl was returning home at Mathamukundapur village in Ganjam block under Humma police outpost from a coaching class in the morning.
As the girl riding her bicycle reached a lonely stretch, the 20-year-old youth, identified as Varun Nahak of her village stopped her. He dragged her to a nearby paddy field and tried to rape her.
As the girl raised an alarm, the youth ran to a car standing nearby and sped away. On hearing the girl’s cry, some locals rushed to the spot. They informed the police and chased the car. They managed to intercept the car and get hold of Varun whom they took to Rambha police station.
The police registered a case after the girl’s mother lodged an FIR in this regard. Police have seized the car and started investigation.
