Compensate differently-abled assaulted by RPF jawans: OHRC directs Ministry of Railways
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) on Friday directed the Ministry of Railways to provide Rs 25,000 compensation to a differently-abled man, who was assaulted by a group of Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel earlier in January this year.
Acting on a petition filed by advocate and human rights activist Prabir Kumar Das, the acting chairperson of OHRC Justice Bira Kishore
Mishra directed the Ministry to compensate the victim identified as Suresh Sahu, a resident of Chanmara area under Chaibasa police limits in Jharkhand, within the next three months.
On January 5, three RPF personnel dragged Sahu from Guwahati-Bangalore Express and thrashed him up mercilessly on platform number-3 of Balasore railway station for allegedly stealing a cell phone from a passenger and dumped him at Balasore station before fleeing in a train.
The matter came to the fore after a video clipping of the inhuman act went viral. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu had also directed the RPF DG to probe the matter.
