Malkangiri: Patrolling and combing operations have been intensified in the Maoist-hit areas across Malkangiri district following reports of rebels observing martyrs’ week from July 28 to August 3.
“To prevent any untoward incident, additional security forces have been deployed in areas bordering Koraput, Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh,” DGP KB Singh said.
The special operation group (SOG) jawans have been directed to remain vigilant and keep a close watch on the situation, he added.
The Maoists had put up posters announcing the martyrs’ week. They are planning to observe it by constructing pillars in memory of 30 comrades, who were killed on October 24 last year, reports said.
Police suspect that the rebels would try to mark the occasion with attacks on security forces.
On Wednesday, Maoist posters and banners were found at different places in Narayanpatna block, including Podapadar panchayat office and on Janjabati river bank, in Koraput district. Through the posters, the Red rebels had appealed to the people to extend their support for observance of the week.
